Putin Pledges Support to New Syrian Leader in First Call

The Kremlin has announced that President Vladimir Putin conducted a telephone conversation with Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Orda reports.
During their discussion, Putin emphasized Russia's continued commitment to Syria's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He also pledged ongoing Russian support for improving Syria's socio-economic conditions, including humanitarian aid initiatives.
Russia provided military and diplomatic support to Assad's regime in Syria since 2015, helping him maintain power during the country's civil war.
After his ousting, Russia has had to find inroads to maintain its military presence in Syria, though previous reports indicate that some Russian military equipment may have been withdrawn.
Damascus has also put forward conditions for normalizing ties between the two nations, including acknowledging past errors and compensation.
Reports also surfaced that the new Syrian leadership could have demanded Assad be handed over.
Assad had fled to Moscow after being ousted.
