A foal named Zhelmaya has been born to a Przewalski’s mare named Kurbankul. This is Kurbankul’s second foal,  Orda.kz reports, citing the Almaty akimat.

Przewalski’s horse is one of the world’s rarest wild horse species. It is listed in Kazakhstan’s Red Book and on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Almaty Zoo participates in programs to preserve rare and endangered animals, including the saiga antelope, polar bear, Steller’s sea eagle and Przewalski’s horse. The birth of every young animal is therefore not only a joyful event for zoo staff but also a contribution to preserving biodiversity and protecting endangered species.

We provide the animals with the most comfortable possible conditions, select breeding pairs in accordance with the recommendations of the international breeding program and ensure constant veterinary supervision. The birth of each foal confirms that this work is producing results and helping preserve the world’s only surviving species of wild horse, said Agybay Azhibayev, Almaty Zoo’s deputy director for veterinary care.

The Przewalski’s horse family is currently being kept in a special “quiet” area closed to visitors. The mother and foal are both doing well.

Earlier, Orda.kz reported that another group of Przewalski’s horses had been brought to Kazakhstan from Berlin Zoo.
