The state does not yet plan to extend the Almaty metro to Alatau, Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev said, Orda.kz reports.
According to him, Alatau’s population is currently too small for a metro line.
A little more than 50,000 people officially live in Alatau now. That is why there is no point in building a metro there yet. The general plan already provides for an LRT line between Almaty, Alatau, and Konayev. But we are considering other options, including a hovercraft train and other modern solutions. We are now studying international experience and want to choose the most effective and inexpensive option,Bozumbayev said.
He said the authorities are attracting international transport specialists to avoid problems in the future.
The general plan for Alatau was developed by Surbana Jurong, which took part in the development of Singapore and other major cities. We are now additionally attracting international specialists in urbanism, transport interchanges, and master planning. We are taking into account the mistakes of other cities and making decisions in advance to avoid transport problems in the future, the deputy prime minister said.
Bozumbayev added that no final decision has yet been made on what the main transport link between Almaty and Alatau will be.
