Residents of Mangistau Region have reported large numbers of locusts on social media, raising concerns about possible damage to farmland and crops, Orda.kz reports, citing Lada.kz.
Earlier, swarms of locusts were filmed in Karaganda Region.
Mangistau’s regional territorial inspectorate of the State Inspection Committee in the agro-industrial complex confirmed to Lada.kz that locust pests had been recorded in the region this year. Acting inspection head Zholdas Sagyngali said frequent rainfall and favorable weather conditions had contributed to their spread.
Specialists are identifying pests and areas where their numbers exceed the economic threshold of harmfulness. Information on such areas, including geographic coordinates, is sent to local executive bodies and service organizations for action.
Chemical treatment is being carried out by the contractor Magtoxin LLP, the report said.
Under the approved plan, the region plans to treat 11,100 hectares against non-swarming locust pests. Of that area, 9,100 hectares are in Beineu District, and another 2,000 hectares are in Mangistau District.
So far, 4,300 hectares have been treated in Beineu District. Similar chemical treatment measures will continue in the Tushchykuduk rural district.
Earlier, Kazakhstan decided to use drones to spray locusts from the air.
