President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev voted in Kazakhstan’s Kurultai election before speaking to reporters about the appointment of the country’s vice president, Orda.kz reports.
Tokayev said Kazakhstan particularly needed the position amid the current difficult circumstances.
Who will become vice president will be known within the next week or ten days. It would be premature to name the person now. I think it will be someone well known whom you all know,Tokayev said.
The president cast his ballot at polling station No. 520 in Astana’s Palace of Independence.
Kazakhstan previously had a vice president from 1991 to 1996. The restoration of the office was proposed during the constitutional reform process in January 2026 and was later established under the country’s new political system.
The vice president will be appointed by the president with the consent of a majority of Kurultai deputies. The official will represent Kazakhstan internationally, work with the Kurultai, the government and other state bodies on the president’s behalf, and cooperate with public, political, scientific and cultural organizations.
While in office, the vice president may not serve as a deputy, run a business or belong to a political party.
Voting in Kazakhstan’s first election to the new unicameral Kurultai began on the morning of August 23. Orda.kz previously examined what the election could change.
