Kazakhstan Seeks UNESCO Status for Mangystau Rock Mosques

UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee will consider Kazakhstan’s nomination of the “Rock Mosques and Associated Sacred Sites of Mangystau” at its 48th session in South Korea, Orda.kz reports, citing Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry.
The nomination includes the Beket-Ata, Karaman-Ata, Shakpak-Ata, Shopan-Ata and Sultan-Epe mosques and their surrounding sacred sites.
The session runs from July 19 to 29. The committee will examine 33 nominations for the World Heritage List and review the condition of sites already under UNESCO protection.
About 3,000 delegates, experts and representatives of international organizations have gathered in Busan. Kazakhstan is one of the World Heritage Committee’s 21 members.
The session was opened by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany.
