Kazakh Foreign Minister Yermek Kosherbayev spoke by phone with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Orda.kz reports, citing the Kazakh Foreign Ministry.
The two officials discussed the situation surrounding the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), relations between Kazakhstan and the United States, and preparations for President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s upcoming visit to the U.S. for the G20 summit.
The talks took place against the backdrop of July’s drone attacks on two tankers loading Kazakh oil at the CPC marine terminal. No casualties or oil spills were reported.
Kazakhstan condemned the strikes as an infringement on its economic interests and called for an immediate halt to the attacks. The Foreign Ministry also urged the country’s international partners to condemn the incidents and said Kazakhstan may seek compensation under international law once the damage has been fully assessed.
