Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed a law banning electric scooters from sidewalks and pedestrian paths, citing a surge in accidents involving the vehicles, Orda.kz reports.
Last year, scooters were involved in 139 road accidents, injuring 149 people. The ban aims to remove the threat scooters pose to pedestrian safety.
The law also returns oversight of driving schools to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The ministry will now directly issue permits to driver training organizations and inspect their operations, with the goal of improving education quality and reducing accident rates.
Other provisions include the lifting of a longstanding ban on parking with a running engine in populated areas, the introduction of special state license plates for electric vehicle owners, and an expansion of automated traffic violation cameras on roads.
