The government has adopted a resolution allowing the capture of rare aquatic animals, Orda.kz reports.

The measure concerns 66 Caspian seals, which are to be captured for scientific research and tagging. After that, the animals are to be returned to their natural habitat. The work will take place from April 27 to December 31, 2026 on islands in the Mangystau and Atyrau regions.

The Caspian seal is the only marine mammal in the Caspian Sea and a species listed in Kazakhstan’s Red Book. Its population has caused growing concern in recent years because of marine pollution and mass die-offs.

The resolution also sets a fee for the capture of one seal at 1.93 MCI, or about 8,300 tenge.

In addition to seals, the document allows the capture of Aral barbel and nelma. It says this is necessary for breeding and population recovery.

The mass death of Caspian seals in recent years remains one of the region’s most acute environmental problems.
