The Kazakh government has allocated 1.1 billion tenge to study and preserve the Caspian Sea, Orda.kz reports.
The funds were transferred from the government reserve to the Kazakh Research Institute of the Caspian Sea under a resolution signed by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov.
The money will be used to purchase sea-monitoring equipment and upgrade the institute’s hydrobiology and hydrochemistry laboratories. This will allow scientists to conduct more extensive field research and carry out regular monitoring of water conditions, climate indicators and bioresources.
The institute is also expanding cooperation with foreign partners and has joined the Association of Universities and Scientific Centers of the Caspian Countries.
Caspian Sea levels have been falling across all five littoral states — Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran. Environmentalists attribute the drop to a combination of climatic and human-driven factors.
