The main reasons are the loss of these birds’ natural habitat due to aggressive development and the destruction of green spaces, ornithologist and scientific director of the Kazakhstan Association for Biodiversity Conservation Sergey Sklyarenko said at the Regional Communications Service site in Almaty, Orda.kz reports.
For a full life, sparrows and swallows need dense trees and shrubs, as well as open areas with grasses where they can collect seeds and catch insects. There are fewer and fewer such places in Almaty every year, the expert said on International Bird Day.
There is also some good news: more and more waterfowl are staying in the city for the winter. These include ducks and a rare blue bird. They live on reservoirs that do not freeze.
Everyone can contribute to bird conservation. It is important to improve habitat conditions by using more native plants, preserving foliage and not removing it completely. This creates a food base, since insects spend the winter in the leaves. It is also important to reduce excessive maintenance of urban areas and provide birds with access to water, said Sergey Sklyarenko
According to him, birds should be fed in winter, especially tits. In summer, they can use drinkers and artificial nests placed in yards or on balconies and roofs. All this will help preserve the remains of wildlife in the metropolis and make life more interesting and pleasant for both people and birds.
