Kazakhstan and Vietnam have reached an agreement to launch a new airline operating a fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft, Orda.kz reports.
In Astana, a roundtable was held with business representatives from both countries, where the new airline brand, Vietjet Qazaqstan, was officially introduced.
The joint venture is being formed on the foundation of Kazakhstan’s Qazaq Air, with the involvement of Vietnam’s Vietjet Air and the Sovico Group, led by billionaire Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao.
Qazaq Air and Vietjet Air signed a strategic partnership agreement outlining plans for a fleet of at least 20 Boeing 737s. Vietjet and Sovico will play an active role in managing the airline.
Qazaq Air also signed an agreement with Boeing to provide full fleet support, including technical assistance, pilot training, and spare parts supply.
Nurlan Zhakupov, head of the Samruq-Qazyna Fund, stated that the new carrier would enhance regional transport connectivity and open new avenues for economic development.
Vietjet Qazaqstan will operate domestic and international routes, with flights planned to Russia and Vietnam, including popular destinations like Phu Quoc and Da Nang.
The establishment of Vietjet Qazaqstan marks another step in Vietjet’s international expansion across Central Asia. While the size of Vietjet’s stake in the venture has not been disclosed, Sovico’s involvement has been confirmed.
In late 2024, it was announced that Qazaq Air would be sold to a Vietnamese consortium, including Central Asia Aviation Holdings Limited. The Samruq-Qazyna Fund finalized the deal after three privatization attempts in 2023.
