“We Need A Year Of Observation” — Talks On Kazakhstan’s Balkhash Nuclear Power Plant Held In Moscow

Almasadam Satkaliyev, chair of Kazakhstan’s Atomic Energy Agency, held talks in Moscow with Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev, including on the construction of the Balkhash nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan, Orda.kz reports.
The parties discussed training for the nuclear industry, the development of scientific and technical cooperation, the localization of production and the participation of Kazakhstani enterprises in nuclear projects.
According to Satkaliyev, the sides reached a common understanding on all positions.
Basic approaches have been developed that fully meet the interests of our states and the strategic nature of relations between our countries,he said.
Likhachev stressed the importance of conducting engineering, environmental and climatic studies at the site while preparing the Balkhash NPP project.
Almost the entire production program is being implemented. We need at least a year of site observation in order to prepare all the necessary reports on this basis and implement the project with clear reference to the natural, geological and weather conditions of this specific location,Likhachev said.
According to him, the Balkhash plant project will be developed with consideration of the site’s local characteristics and based on Russian nuclear energy technologies.
