Extreme heat and drought are not expected to cause widespread crop losses in Kazakhstan, Orda.kz reports.
Deputy Agriculture Minister Azat Sultanov made the statement at a government briefing.
Hot weather is being observed across most of Kazakhstan. However, the southern regions, where most irrigated farmland is located, are not experiencing problems with water supplies,Sultanov said.
He added that water is being supplied according to agreed schedules and contracts with farmers, meaning there is no reason for concern about crops on irrigated land.
Rainfall in the northern Kostanay and North Kazakhstan regions has helped offset the effects of the drought. According to Sultanov, 96% of crops are in good or satisfactory condition, with almost no crop losses reported.
The condition of crops in the Karaganda and Akmola regions will be assessed closer to the start of the harvest season.
Sultanov added that farmers are using drought-resistant seed varieties and mineral fertilizers to protect their crops.
