Health Minister Akmaral Alnazarova has ordered inspections of all 69 maternity care facilities in Kazakhstan by August 15, Orda.kz reports.
Specialists from the Sanitary and Epidemiological Control Committee will assess whether perinatal centers comply with infection-control requirements. They will examine disinfection and sterilization procedures, the use of protective equipment and measures to prevent hospital-acquired infections.
The inspections are intended to identify and eliminate risks to mothers and newborns. Following the review, the authorities plan to revise sanitary regulations, procedures for investigating infections and inspection checklists. Each region must also prepare a separate roadmap to improve infection control.
Regional health departments were instructed to provide hospitals with the necessary equipment, supplies and personal protective equipment. Medical workers will also receive additional training.
The authorities separately promised to tighten controls on the sale of prescription antibiotics. The Ministry of Health warned that uncontrolled antibiotic use accelerates the development of drug-resistant bacteria.
