A police operation took place on the afternoon of June 30 at the Baku office of Russian state media outlet Sputnik, which is part of the Russia Sevodnya news agency, Orda.kz reports.
As a result of the operation by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, two employees of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), working at this agency, were detained,
reported Vesti.az, citing its own sources.
According to Azerbaijani media, the operation may have been prompted by the continued activities of Sputnik in the country, despite local authorities having restricted the agency in February to only one staff member nationwide, effectively ceasing its operations.
The detentions came shortly after a security raid in Yekaterinburg during which two members of the Azerbaijani diaspora were killed.
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry has sent a note of protest to the Russian Federation regarding the incident.
