The Caspian Sea level continues to decline, with some islands expanding two- to threefold in recent years, Orda.kz reports, citing TASS.
A study of the northern Caspian Sea found that continued shallowing is changing the coastline and creating new land areas. Scientists have recorded growth in both existing and newly formed islands.
The area of Chistaya Bank island has nearly doubled compared with 2019. Researchers say this happened as the water level fell and land emerged on its eastern, western, and southern sides.
Another island, which formed on the site of the Tbilisi bank, has almost tripled in size over the past year.
One thing is clear so far — the sea level continues to fall, said Ivan Yermakov, head of the expedition and a junior researcher at the Caspian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Oceanology.
The Caspian Sea reaches lower levels every year. The falling sea level affects the region’s ecosystem, shipping, and coastal infrastructure.
