Euro 1988 Winner John van ’t Schip to Coach Kazakhstan's National Football Team

Dutch coach John van ’t Schip is set to become head coach of Kazakhstan’s national football team. The Kazakhstan Football Federation has reached an agreement with him, with the contract expected to be signed after a meeting of the KFF Executive Committee, Orda.kz reports.
Van ’t Schip won the 1988 European Championship with the Netherlands. During his playing career, he represented Ajax and Italy’s Genoa.
International Coaching Experience
The 62-year-old began his coaching career at Ajax, where he held several roles, including spells in charge of the first team. He later coached Twente, PEC Zwolle, Mexico’s Guadalajara and Australia’s Melbourne City, winning the Australia Cup with Melbourne in 2016.
Van ’t Schip has also managed the national teams of Greece and Armenia. Greece recorded 11 wins, nine draws and six defeats in 26 matches under him, including a draw against Spain and a victory over Sweden.
Coaching Staff
Nurbol Zhumaskaliyev and Eldos Akhmetov have been appointed assistant coaches. Yuri Novikov will serve as goalkeeping coach, Vadim Borovsky as fitness coach and Timur Kusainov as analyst.
Zhumaskaliyev spent most of his playing career at Kostanay’s Tobol, making more than 500 appearances. He holds the Kazakhstan Premier League record for the most goals scored for a single club. During his tenure as Tobol’s head coach, the team won the Kazakhstan Cup and Super Cup.
Novikov is best known for his years with Pavlodar’s Irtysh. He won three Kazakhstan league titles and was named the country’s best goalkeeper four times. In 2003, he was named Kazakhstan’s footballer of the year. He also helped Irtysh reach the semifinals of the Asian Club Championship in 2001.
Akhmetov came through the Taraz academy and won two Kazakhstan league titles with Astana in 2014 and 2015. He also played for Irtysh, Kairat and the Kazakhstan national team, making more than 200 Premier League appearances. He retired in 2023 before moving into coaching.
