A Persian leopard named Altynkoz has been spotted again in the Ustyurt Reserve after traveling hundreds of kilometers across Mangistau, Orda.kz reports.
Camera traps recorded the leopard in March and May. In April, what was likely the same animal was seen in Kyzylsay Nature Park, where staff filmed it on a mobile phone.
Specialists believe Altynkoz is covering long distances in search of a female. From March to May, he traveled at least 450 kilometers from the reserve to Kyzylsay and back.
Kazakhstan does not have a permanent population of Persian leopards. The animals occasionally enter Mangistau from Turkmenistan.
The Persian leopard was added to Kazakhstan’s Red Book in 2021. Experts estimate that only 1000 to 3000 individuals remain worldwide.
