Tokayev Signs Amendments on Responsible Treatment of Animals

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed amendments to the law regulating the responsible treatment of animals, Orda.kz reports, citing Akorda.
The law "On Responsible Treatment of Animals" was originally adopted in Kazakhstan in 2021. It was meant to establish humane standards for animal treatment, ban cruelty, and regulate the work of shelters, trapping, and sterilization.
In practice, however, the law has faced repeated criticism. Animal rights activists have pointed to ongoing problems with trapping, animal keeping conditions, and a lack of shelters across the regions. Local authorities, meanwhile, have raised concerns about a rising number of stray dogs and residents' complaints about attacks.
