Emergency workers are continuing to reinforce the breached Shoptikol dam in Akmola Region’s Korgalzhyn district after the structure was damaged by inflowing meltwater, Orda.kz reports. Officials say there is currently no threat to residents of the nearby village of Sabyndy.
The breach was reported on April 6. Water began spreading across the fields toward the settlement, and an operational headquarters was set up at the scene. According to officials, regional akim Marat Akhmetzhanov and Serik Dzhunisbekov, chairman of the Emergency Situations Ministry’s committee for disaster prevention, are at the site.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations said round-the-clock response work is underway. More than 230 people and dozens of pieces of equipment have been deployed, including personnel from the ministry, local authorities, police and road services. Officials said work is focused on strengthening the site and redirecting meltwater away from populated areas.
Work is underway to raise the level of the Astana–Korgalzhyn highway and redirect meltwater into the steppe zone. officials said.
They added that all facilities in Sabyndy are operating normally and that the situation remains under control.
