Kazakhstan Approves Registration Procedure for Self-Driving Cars

Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development has established a registration procedure for autonomous vehicles participating in a pilot project. Companies will be allowed to operate them within designated pilot areas only after laboratory testing and obtaining a safety certificate, Orda.kz reports.
The rules apply to passenger cars and small buses in the M1 and M2 categories imported from third countries. Vehicles must be no more than three years old. Only legal entities registered in Kazakhstan and admitted to the pilot project may import them.
The classification ranges from Level 0, where the driver has full control, to Level 5, where no driver, steering wheel or pedals are required.
Levels 1 and 2 provide varying degrees of driver assistance. Level 3 allows the vehicle to drive under certain conditions, although the driver must be ready to take control. Level 4 permits driverless operation within designated areas or under specified conditions.
Vehicles that pass the required checks may operate only within the pilot-project area and after all admission requirements have been met.
