This year, the maximum water level at the Ural River (Jaiq) hydropost in Atyrau is expected to range between 430 and 490 centimeters. As the region braces for potential spring floods, authorities are ramping up preparations, reports an Orda.kz correspondent.
According to the Atyrau Region Akimat, four additional seasonal hydroposts have been installed in the Qyzylkogin, Inder, and Makhambet districts, with plans to add more in the near future.
Compared to last winter, precipitation levels in the region have dropped by an average of 36%.
Nurlan Zhanabayev, head of the Regional Department of Emergency Situations, confirmed that security agencies and specialized equipment are fully prepared for flood response. The region has mobilized 1,660 personnel, 283 units of equipment, 269 motor pumps, and 39 watercraft.
Additionally, authorities have stocked 48.5 tons of fuel and lubricants, 1,453 tons of inert materials, and 866,300 sandbags.
To support residents affected by potential flooding, 200 temporary shelters with a combined capacity of 29,000 people have been set up. Officials are currently refining the list of at-risk settlements. Designated personnel will conduct surveys and continuous monitoring of vulnerable areas.
In Jylyoi District, which suffered severe flooding last year, preventive measures are also underway amid heightened flood risks.
The Akimat monitors the water level in the Jem River daily. According to the latest 10-day measurements, the water level at the Akkiiztogay post is 135-136 centimeters, while the water level at neighboring hydroposts in the Aqtobe region (Saga and Jagabulaq) has not increased. To prevent emergencies, a 24-hour watch has been organized at the three most dangerous sections of the Jem River. In addition, to ensure the safety of residents, a canal has been temporarily opened in the area of the villages of Qyzyljar and Jienay—this will reduce the intensity of the floods. All structures are in full readiness, stated Jylyoi District Akim Zhumabek Karazhanov.
Meanwhile, Atyrau Region Akim Serik Shapkenov noted that water levels in the Ural River this year could be lower than in 2024, suggesting a less severe flood season.
My deputy visited the Orenburg region of the Russian Federation, where he familiarized himself with the current situation. According to preliminary forecasts, the volume of water in the Jaiq River (Ural - Ed.) this year may be two times less than in the previous year, said Serik Shapkenov.
With proactive measures in place, local authorities remain vigilant as they navigate the upcoming flood season.
