Kazakhstan has approved new rules for the national biometric authentication system. The system will analyze images and video streams to detect fraud attempts involving fake photos and pre-recorded videos, Orda.kz reports.
Under the rules, the system will automatically verify the authenticity of a user’s face image during biometric authentication. Developers have included a mechanism to detect signs that static images, fake materials, or pre-recorded videos are being used.
To prevent spoofing during biometric authentication, when the current face image is compared with the reference face image from the national system, the system verifies the reliability of the current image. This includes automated analysis of the video stream to detect signs of non-compliance, including the use of fake, static, or pre-recorded images and/or video materials, the rules state.
The system will also store a reference image of the user’s face after biometric data is collected. For initial identity verification, developers plan to use data from the Individuals database and the Berkut system. After verification, the initiator will be notified whether the authentication was successful.
The document also sets out the procedure for connecting to the national biometric authentication system.
The rules will come into force on July 12, 2026.
