Yerzhan Ashikbayev has replaced Akan Rakhmetullin as Deputy Foreign Minister, Orda.kz reports.
According to a presidential decree signed by President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev on October 13, First Deputy Foreign Minister Akan Rakhmetullin was relieved of his duties, and Ashikbayev — who until recently served as Kazakhstan’s ambassador to the United States — was appointed in his place.
Rakhmetullin had worked alongside Murat Nurtleu for three years when Nurtleu headed the Foreign Ministry. Nurtleu was dismissed in late September and moved to the Presidential Administration, where he now oversees investment policy.
The post of Foreign Minister is currently held by Yermek Kosherbayev.
Ashikbayev served as ambassador in Washington for four years. His resignation followed President Toqayev’s recent visit to New York.
