President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has reappointed Aslambek Mergaliyev as chair of the Supreme Court and Berik Asylov as prosecutor general under Kazakhstan’s new Constitution, Orda.kz reports.
Mergaliyev has chaired the Supreme Court since December 2022. His reappointment became the second key personnel decision after the new Constitution came into force on July 1.
A day earlier, Tokayev reappointed Berik Asylov as prosecutor general. Asylov has led the Prosecutor General’s Office since March 2022.
The reappointments are linked to the requirements of the new Constitution. Within two months of its entry into force, the president must reappoint several key officials, including the prosecutor general, the chair of the National Bank, the chair of the Supreme Judicial Council, the chair of the Supreme Court and the commissioner for human rights.
Justice Minister Yerlan Sarsembayev recently said that the government must resign before the newly elected Kurultai in September. After that, with the consent of the Kurultai, Kazakhstan’s new unicameral parliament, the vice president, government members and other officials listed in the Constitution will be appointed.
