Rescuers evacuated two Russian climbers injured on separate peaks in the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains, Orda.kz reports. A Mi-8 helicopter operated by Kazakhstan’s Emergency Situations Ministry was deployed for the operation.
The emergency service received a call through 112. A woman born in 2002 had suffered an open leg fracture while climbing Oktyabrenok Peak in Almaty Region’s Karasai district.
A second climber, born in 1992, was injured while ascending Mayakovsky Peak in the Talgar district.
The operation involved the Barys Republican Rescue Squad, the Almaty Emergency Situations Department’s rescue service and doctors from the Center for Disaster Medicine.
The helicopter first evacuated the 34-year-old climber from Mayakovsky Peak, at an altitude of 4,208 meters. Rescuers then flew to Oktyabrenok Peak, at 3,480 meters, to retrieve the 24-year-old woman with the fractured leg.
Both climbers were flown to the helipad at Almaty City Clinical Hospital No. 4 and handed over to doctors.
The Emergency Situations Ministry said the operation took place in difficult high-altitude conditions. The helicopter crew had to land in confined areas surrounded by rocky slopes.
