Elections to Kazakhstan’s new unicameral parliament, the Kurultai, will be held in August 2026, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said. He said he would sign the election decree immediately after the new Constitution comes into force, giving political parties about five months to prepare, Orda.kz reports.
The elections to the Kurultai will mark the beginning of a large-scale restructuring of Kazakhstan’s entire political system. It is extremely important that political and economic transformations go hand in hand with positive changes in society. the president said.
Orda.kz has already explained the essence of the parliamentary reform. Kazakhstan will remain a presidential republic, but the architecture of representative power will change. The current bicameral parliament will be replaced by a unicameral Kurultai, elected through a proportional party-list system. Single-member districts will remain only at the local level. In addition, the post of vice president will be introduced, while the National Kurultai and the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan will be merged into the People’s Council, an advisory body under the president.
Political analyst Islam Kurayev explained for Orda.kz that the reform does not redistribute power, but makes the presidential model more institutional and procedural. The main question is how much real substance these new institutions will ultimately have.
