The Atyrau Sturgeon Fish Plant tried to purchase sturgeon caviar for 147.4 million tenge from third-party suppliers, even though the law expressly prohibits it, Orda.kz reports.
The state-owned enterprise posted a procurement notice for the purchase of sturgeon caviar worth 147.4 million tenge. The problem is that the law “On the Protection, Reproduction and Use of the Animal World” prohibits state enterprises from buying such caviar. The plant is required to obtain it independently by catching broodstock and raising juveniles.
The prosecutor’s office intervened and cancelled the procurement.
Following a supervisory act by the prosecutor’s office, the procurement was cancelled and budget funds worth 147 million tenge were preserved.the supervisory authority said.
The Atyrau Sturgeon Fish Plant is a key enterprise involved in preserving the sturgeon population in the Caspian basin. It raises juvenile beluga, Russian sturgeon, ship sturgeon and stellate sturgeon, and releases millions of fry into the Zhaiyk River and the Caspian Sea every year. Many of these species are listed in the Red Book.
