A square in Omsk may be named after Kemel Tokayev, the father of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Orda.kz reports.
The initiative was supported by the administration of the city’s Central District. The final decision will be made by deputies at a plenary session of the Omsk City Council.
The Regional Kazakh National-Cultural Autonomy of Omsk Region proposed naming the square near Hospital Lane after Kemel Tokayev.
Kemel Tokayev was connected to Omsk through the war. In 1945, the commander of a machine-gun squad was seriously wounded in the leg. He was taken to an evacuation hospital in Omsk, where doctors saved his leg from amputation.
In 2020, a memorial plaque was installed on the hospital building in his memory.
Two public spaces in Omsk may soon be named after prominent figures, one of them after Kemel Tokayev.
