In April and May 2026, 13 people in Kazakhstan were sentenced to various prison terms for terrorist and extremist crimes in criminal cases investigated by the National Security Committee (KNB), Orda.kz reports.

According to the KNB, one of those convicted was a resident of Astana. Investigators said he spread terrorist ideology on social media and persuaded acquaintances to travel to areas of terrorist activity. The court sentenced him to eight years in prison.

Another convict, a native of Shymkent, called for the creation of a theocratic state in Kazakhstan and spread terrorist ideas. He was sentenced to seven years in prison.

The KNB also reported new detentions. In April and May, 11 people were detained on suspicion of similar crimes in Astana, Almaty, Shymkent and the Atyrau, Aktobe, Zhambyl, Karaganda, Turkestan and Abay regions. Among the detainees were two foreigners and three citizens of Kazakhstan extradited from abroad.

According to the security service, the suspects distributed extremist materials online and among people around them, called on others to travel to areas of terrorist activity and urged violence against people who did not share their views.

Pre-trial investigations are ongoing under the relevant articles of Kazakhstan’s Criminal Code, the committee said.
