Serik Yergeshov has been named head of the Southern Region Police Department, following approval from the Presidential Administration, Orda.kz reports.
The 46-year-old colonel, who has served in law enforcement since 2000, moves to the role from his previous position as deputy head of the Shymkent Department, where he oversaw investigations and criminal operations.
Yergeshov replaces Major General Makhsudkhan Ablazimov, whose tenure was marked by several high-profile incidents.
One is the sexual exploitation case involving a schoolgirl.
The department also faced corruption scandals, including a recent case where a police major accepted a 2 million tenge bribe to help an arrested person evade charges.
