Police Uncover Illegal Gold Extraction Scheme in Zhambyl Region

More than 12 tons of gold-bearing raw materials have been seized from illegal circulation in recent years, and more than 1,400 people have been held accountable, Orda.kz reports, citing the Interior Ministry.
According to the ministry, police uncovered groups involved in extracting and selling gold outside the law. One of the cases concerns the Akbakai deposit in the Zhambyl region. Investigators say a group of people mined and removed ore there. The case is now being heard in court.
Police stopped an illegal attempt to enter the site. As a result of the measures taken, a group of residents of the Zhambyl, Karaganda and Ulytau regions was detained. They had tried to establish a channel for the theft of gold-bearing material. Weapons, a large amount of cash, communication devices and vehicles were seized from them.the ministry said.
Police added that security and plant staff are also being checked for possible involvement in the illegal scheme.
The amount of damage is still being determined.
