On October 26, thousands took to Tbilisi's streets marking the anniversary of the 2024 parliamentary elections. Under the slogan “To the End, to Victory!”, protesters called for the government’s resignation, early elections, and the release of political prisoners, Orda.kz reports, citing NewsGeorgia.
The march began at Republic Square and moved toward the parliament building, shutting down Rustaveli Avenue. Traffic came to a standstill as demonstrators filled the street.
Opposition leaders, activists, and relatives of those jailed after pro-European rallies joined the procession. Many carried Georgian and EU flags. The fifth president of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, was also present, according to Ekho Kavkaza.
The protest comes just days after new restrictions on public gatherings came into force. Since October 17, wearing a mask at a rally or blocking roads is punishable by up to 15 days of arrest. Repeat violations are now considered criminal offenses — with penalties of up to two years in prison.
According to the Georgian Interior Ministry, over the past three days, police have detained 60 people for blocking roads or wearing masks. In total, about 150 protesters — including journalists, doctors, and artists — have been arrested since the new rules took effect.
