Kazakhstan may launch a pilot project on molecular fuel labeling, Orda.kz reports.
The system was discussed at a meeting at KazMunayGas with the participation of the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Trade, the State Revenue Committee, the Center for the Development of the Digital Economy, and Singapore-based company Nanolumi.
The technology involves special molecular markers that are added to fuel to track its path from production and import to sale at gas stations.
The labeling system is intended to help the state better control the petroleum products market, monitor fuel movement, and combat illegal trafficking.
Following the meeting, participants decided to launch a pilot project in line with Kazakhstan’s legislation. Details of the pilot have not yet been disclosed.
Molecular labeling is considered more difficult to circumvent. While subsidized diesel fuel was previously marked with different colors, the new markers are expected to make it possible to track fuel without visible changes to its composition or appearance.
