Nine people have been detained after an international operation shut down a fraudulent call center in Ukraine. The damage from the group’s activities exceeded 85 million tenge, Orda.kz reports.
Kazakh and Ukrainian law enforcement agencies, including Kazakhstan’s Interior Ministry, Ukraine’s National Police, and the prosecutor general’s offices of both countries, conducted an international special operation in Odesa. As a result, they stopped the activities of an organized fraudulent call center.
According to Kazakhstan’s Interior Ministry, the criminal group had been committing internet fraud against citizens of Kazakhstan for a long time. More than 120 people are believed to have fallen victim to the group. The total damage exceeded 85 million tenge.
The attackers used social engineering methods. They persuaded citizens to install malicious applications. After gaining remote access to the devices, they stole money and personal data, said Zhandos Suyunbay, head of the Cybercrime Counteraction Department at Kazakhstan’s Interior Ministry.
Police conducted eight searches. They seized two luxury cars, 26 computers, 49 phones, instructions, and scripts for psychologically pressuring victims. Among the items found were Kazakhstan-related symbols, which the fraudsters allegedly used to appear more convincing.
Nine Ukrainian citizens were detained and placed in a detention facility.
