Chinese vehicles were illegally imported into Kazakhstan, and the Transport Prosecutor’s Office is now investigating how the scheme was carried out, Orda.kz reports.
According to the supervisory authority, trucks worth more than 150 million tenge were illegally brought into the country.
The vehicles were registered with forged documents, despite not meeting environmental standards, the department said.
The investigation is ongoing.
Earlier, we reported that discrepancies between Kazakhstan’s and China’s customs statistics reached a record $14 billion. Authorities have been promising to address the issue for more than a decade, but in reality admit that “it is impossible to eliminate the discrepancies.”
Over the years, statements concerning the problem have been made by Nursultan Nazarbayev, Dariga Nazarbayeva, and Qasym-Jomart Toqayev.
Yet the scale of smuggling and the underreporting of import prices continue to grow.
Most recently, Almaty police placed former Chief Transport Prosecutor Maksat Duissenov on the wanted list.
