The decision was made during the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea, Orda.kz reports.
The listing covers five unique sites: Beket Ata, Shopan Ata, Karaman Ata Mosque, Shakpak Ata and Sultan Upi Mosque.
Yerlan Karin, deputy head of Kazakhstan’s Presidential Administration, called the decision a landmark event for the country. According to him, Kazakhstan’s national cultural heritage was last added to the World Heritage List more than two decades ago.
The rock mosques of Mangystau were not only places of prayer and worship but also centers of education and learning. These rocks preserve the historical memory of our people and the teachings of our ancestors,Karin said at the committee meeting.
Efforts to secure World Heritage status for the rock mosques were launched on the instructions of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. He issued the directive during the third meeting of the National Kurultai in Atyrau in 2024.
Karin said the new status would draw greater international attention to Kazakhstan, support tourism and create new opportunities for infrastructure projects.
Kazakhstan also plans to seek UNESCO recognition for Zharkent Mosque, the Ascension Cathedral in Almaty, the Karatau petroglyphs and Abai’s “Words of Edification.”
