KazMunayGas and China’s CNPC want to accelerate several major projects in Kazakhstan. The companies plan to drill 140 new wells at Mangistaumunaigas, launch industrial production at the Urikhtau field and move forward with the expansion of the Shymkent refinery, Orda.kz reports.

Mangistaumunaigas is one of KazMunayGas’s major oil-producing assets, with CNPC participation. In 2025, the company produced 6.1 million tons of oil. In the first five months of 2026, by June 1, production reached 2.5 million tons.

The company now plans to drill 140 new wells in 2026 to increase oil production.

KazMunayGas and CNPC also discussed the Urikhtau gas condensate field. Preparations for full-scale development are continuing there. Equipment is now being purchased, and construction and installation work is starting to supply gas to the Zhanazhol gas processing plant in the Aktobe region.

The industrial launch of the gas condensate part of Central Urikhtau is scheduled for the end of 2026. Natural gas reserves are estimated at 29.4 billion cubic meters. At the initial stage, production is expected to reach about 400 million cubic meters of gas in 2027. After reaching full capacity, the project should provide up to one billion cubic meters of gas per year.

The parties also discussed the expansion of the Shymkent refinery. A feasibility study is now being prepared for the project, while the configuration, technological scheme and licensors are being selected. KazMunayGas head Askhat Khasenov said the feasibility study should be accelerated.

The companies have also chosen the Dostyk site for joint study. It is located on the eastern side of the Caspian Basin.
