Yerlan Akkenshenov commented on the matter, Orda.kz reports, citing Interfax.
Yerlan Akkenshenov commented to the Russian media outlet on the idea of constructing a gas pipeline from Russia to China through Kazakhstan. The minister gave the idea a positive assessment.
As far as I know, Novak’s (Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation) latest statements indicate that Russia is considering it (the construction of a pipeline — IF). For us, this would allow for the gasification of the northeastern regions of Kazakhstan. So we fully support it, Interfax quotes Akkenshenov as saying.
However, the Energy Minister acknowledged that it remains just an idea for now and that no actual project exists yet.
In April, China’s ambassador to Russia, Zhang Hanhui, called the construction of a pipeline transporting gas from Russia to China unrealistic. He said it would be too expensive.
According to the diplomat, a more realistic option is the proposed Power of Siberia 2 pipeline through Mongolia.
