Kazakhstan’s Energy Ministry and the United Nations Development Programme are working on a smart power grid project for the country, Orda.kz reports.

The project is intended to help energy specialists better monitor the load on power grids and manage electricity demand during peak hours.

Working meetings on the Demand-driven Digital Smart Grids project were held in Astana. They were attended by representatives of the Energy Ministry, UNDP, KEGOC, the Energy Supervision Committee, and international and Kazakh experts.

The project should allow energy specialists to better understand how consumers use electricity and how demand changes during peak periods.

The meeting also covered the role of aggregators in the electricity market. These are market participants that can unite consumers and help them take part in demand management programs.

The parties also discussed digital consumer profiles. These profiles are expected to show how electricity consumption changes over time. Based on this data, authorities want to create economic incentives for consumers who are ready to reduce or shift their load when the system needs it.

The Energy Ministry and UNDP are also discussing the role of active consumers. These are consumers who can participate in the energy system themselves. For example, a company or household with solar panels could supply part of its electricity to the grid or change consumption depending on system load.
