Kazakhstan’s national railway carrier, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, has begun a large-scale rollout of satellite internet on passenger trains, Orda.kz reports.
KTZ Deputy Chairman for Strategy and Digitalization Anuar Akhmetzhanov announced the project at a government briefing.
According to him, the company carried out two pilot projects in 2025 using OneWeb and Starlink low-orbit satellite systems on the Astana–Mangistau and Astana–Shymkent trains. The tests showed that the technology can provide the required level of connectivity on trains.
We had to check whether they were technically able to provide the necessary level of service. These services were tested on the Astana–Mangistau and Astana–Shymkent trains. They showed that this service can indeed be provided on trains. Today, on behalf of the chairman of the board, the government, and the head of state, we are starting large-scale work to provide our passenger trains with internet. I am only talking about passenger trains operated by the national carrier,he said.
The Nurly Zhol–Semey train has already been fully connected to the internet. Terminal installation is continuing on the Almaty–Pavlodar trains Nos. 31 and 32, Pavlodar–Turkestan trains Nos. 45 and 46, Nurly Zhol–Atyrau trains Nos. 47 and 48, and several other routes.
First, we are taking the busiest trains so that as many people as possible can test and experience internet access on board,Akhmetzhanov said.
According to him, the company plans to provide satellite internet on main routes by the end of the summer.
