Kazakhstan plans to develop a new professional standard in 2026 titled “Digitalization and the Use of AI in Energy,” under which a list of entirely new professions is already being formed, Orda.kz reports, citing the Energy Ministry.
In practice, this means a broader transformation of the industry — from manual management to automated systems in which some decisions will be made by algorithms. This was announced at a meeting of the industry council on electric and thermal power engineering attended by key market players.
Experts also discussed the development of Smart Grid systems, which are expected to become the foundation of the power sector over the next five to 10 years. That means traditional power engineers alone will no longer be enough. The sector will need hybrid specialists with expertise in AI, data and cybersecurity, as well as new professions such as:
- Smart Grid designer;
- AI implementation engineer in power systems;
- cybersecurity specialist for energy networks.
According to the discussion, the issues involved in training personnel for these roles are already being addressed.
