Construction has begun on a one-gigawatt wind power plant in Kazakhstan’s southern Zhambyl region, Orda.kz reports.

The $1.4 billion project is expected to help reduce the electricity deficit in southern Kazakhstan.

The plant is being built by a consortium that includes UAE-based Masdar, W Solar, Qazaq Green Power and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund. Masdar and W Solar each hold 40% stakes, Qazaq Green Power holds 18%, and KIDF holds 2%.

The project stands out not only for its capacity, but also for its battery storage system. The wind farm will be equipped with a 300 MW / 600 MWh energy storage system, which is intended to smooth out fluctuations in generation and support the grid during peak hours.

Authorities expect the plant to reduce CO2 emissions by 2.5 million tons per year.

Commercial launch is scheduled for the third quarter of 2029.
