Kazakhstan Reports Less Crime, But Serious Cases Are Becoming More Prominent

The number of registered criminal offences in Kazakhstan continues to fall, but serious and especially serious crimes are declining much more slowly, Orda.kz reports.
In the first half of 2026, Kazakhstan registered 57 thousand criminal offences. This is 11.7 % fewer than in the same period last year.
Serious crimes fell by 7 %, from 19.3 thousand to 17.9 thousand. Especially serious crimes barely changed: 643 cases were registered, compared with 647 a year earlier.
As a result, serious crimes now make up a larger share of all registered offences. Their share rose from 29.9 % to 31.5 %. The share of especially serious crimes also increased slightly, from 1 % to 1.1 %.
Almaty recorded the highest total number of crimes, with 10.4 thousand cases in six months. Astana followed with 7.4 thousand, while Almaty region registered 4.4 thousand.
Almaty also led in serious crimes, with 3.5 thousand cases. Almaty region had the highest number of especially serious crimes, with 94 cases.
Adjusted for population, Astana and Almaty had the highest overall crime rates. Almaty had the highest rate of serious crimes, with 150 cases per 100 thousand people. Almaty region had the highest rate of especially serious crimes, with 5.9 cases per 100 thousand people.
Overall crime in Kazakhstan is falling, but the most dangerous categories are barely retreating. Their share in the country’s crime statistics continues to grow.
