Kazakhstan Releases More Than 600 Prisoners Under Amnesty

Kazakhstan is continuing to implement its amnesty law. Around 10,000 petitions have been submitted to the courts, First Deputy Chairman of the Interior Ministry’s Penal Enforcement Committee Niyaz Ryspayev said, Orda.kz reports.
Penal institutions have prepared nearly 4,400 submissions, while probation services have prepared more than 6,900. Courts have reviewed 1,000 cases so far.
A total of 620 prisoners have been released. They will remain under administrative supervision.
A further 724 people registered with probation services were released from the remainder of their sentences. More than 730 people also had their sentences reduced. Amnesty is not automatic. Each case receives a legal review, and only a court can make the final decision,Ryspayev said at a briefing.
Authorities say those released will be offered help finding work, replacing documents, and accessing social and legal services.
