Kazakhstan Prepares Amnesty for Minor and Medium-Gravity Offenses

Kazakhstan is preparing an amnesty that could lead to the release of people convicted of minor and medium-gravity offenses, Orda.kz reports.
Deputy Interior Minister Sanzhar Adilov said the document is still being developed and that its final parameters will be presented later.
First of all, persons who committed criminal infractions, minor crimes, as well as medium-gravity crimes that did not cause damage, will be exempted from criminal liability. Convicted persons serving sentences for criminal infractions, minor and medium-gravity crimes will also be released from prison without the need to compensate for damage.Adilov said on the sidelines of the Mazhilis.
The amnesty will not apply to several categories, including:
- extremism and terrorism;
- corruption offenses;
- torture;
- crimes against the sexual integrity of minors;
- people convicted in absentia.
The Interior Ministry stresses that the amnesty will be applied selectively and within the limits set by law.
At the same time, an administrative amnesty is also being prepared in the country. More than 70 state bodies are involved in its development.
