Kazakhstan Plans Large Energy Storage Systems For Wind And Solar Power

Kazakhstan plans to build large energy storage systems that will store electricity from solar and wind power plants and release it into the grid during peak demand, Orda.kz reports.
The issue was discussed at a meeting at the Ministry of Energy. The discussion focused mainly on energy storage systems and pumped-storage hydropower plants.
These systems function as large energy batteries. When solar and wind power plants generate excess electricity, the systems store it. When consumption rises, the stored energy is returned to the grid.
Such projects are especially important as Kazakhstan develops renewable energy. TotalEnergies, Masdar, China Power, and China Energy are building wind farms in Kazakhstan, with each project potentially reaching one gigawatt in capacity.
The authorities also plan to install 300-megawatt storage units at wind farms. The total capacity of such projects is currently estimated at 1.6 GW.
Separately, the Ministry of Energy is working on the construction of two pumped-storage hydropower plants in the Almaty region. They will operate on a similar principle. When there is excess electricity, water is pumped into an upper reservoir. When demand rises, the water is released through turbines to generate power.
