Kazakhstan Opens Criminal Case Against Journalist Over Report on Russia’s War Recruits

A criminal case has been opened against Kazakh journalist Lukpan Akhmedyarov following his publication of a list of citizens whom a Ukrainian government project alleged were fighting for Russia. He has also been barred from leaving Kazakhstan, Orda.kz reports, citing the Adil Soz foundation.
Akhmedyarov is being investigated under Article 274 of Kazakhstan’s Criminal Code, which covers the dissemination of knowingly false information.
He learned about the travel restriction on August 3 at Astana airport, where he was preparing to fly to Montenegro with his family. Border guards prevented him from leaving the country.
Why Was the Case Opened?
Akhmedyarov’s Just Journalism project published a list of Kazakhstanis whom the Ukrainian government project I Want to Live alleged were fighting for Russia.
After the publication, Oskemen resident Andrei Kotov, whose name appeared on the list, filed a police complaint. Kotov said he had traveled to Russia for rotational work and had not participated in the fighting.
Akhmedyarov said he had not presented the Ukrainian project’s claims as established fact. According to the journalist, the publication was intended to draw the Kazakh authorities’ attention to the information and did not directly accuse anyone named on the list.
Astana police are investigating the case.
