Kazakhstan Moves to Prevent Satellite Communications Gap

The government has allocated 10.4 billion tenge from its reserve to develop the new KazSat-3R communications satellite, Orda.kz reports. Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov signed the resolution.

KazSat-3R will replace the existing KazSat-3 satellite, whose operational life ends in 2029. Without a timely replacement, Kazakhstan could lose its assigned orbital slot and frequencies, as well as its national satellite communications capacity.

The KazSat system currently serves 19 telecommunications operators and more than two million television subscribers. It supports television and radio broadcasting, mobile communications, data transmission and internet access. Major telecommunications companies and government agencies also use the system.

KazSat-3R will ensure the uninterrupted operation of satellite networks and expand internet access in remote and sparsely populated areas where building ground infrastructure is difficult or impossible,the government said.

Over the past two years, the share of Kazakhstan’s population with access to high-speed internet has reached 99%.
